Five Common Running Injuries & Information on How to recover

Runners Knee

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

A common overuse injury that causes dull, aching pain around or behind the kneecap. You might feel it during or after running, squatting, or even walking downstairs. It often starts as mild discomfort but can build over time if left untreated.

Shin Splints

Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome

A common running injury that causes pain along the inner edge of the shinbone. It often starts as a dull ache during or after runs, especially when increasing mileage or intensity too quickly.

Achilles Tendinitis

An overuse injury that causes pain, stiffness, or swelling in the back of your heel or lower calf. It’s common in runners, especially after increasing speed, mileage, or hill work too quickly. You might notice it most during your first few steps in the morning or when pushing off while running.

Plantar Fasciitis

A sharp, stabbing pain in the bottom of your foot—usually near the heel—that’s worst with your first steps in the morning or after long periods of rest. It’s caused by inflammation of the thick band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that supports your arch. Runners often feel it after upping mileage or running on hard surfaces.

IT Band Syndrome

Iliotibial Band Syndrome

A sharp or burning pain on the outside of the knee, often striking during runs—especially downhill or after a few miles in. It’s caused by irritation of the iliotibial band, a thick band of tissue that runs from your hip to your shin.
